About Hannahstown Mutual
It was August of 1859 when a group of villagers assembled at St. Luke Church in Hannahstown, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and decided to organize a Mutual Fire Insurance Company to provide protection against loss by fire. At that time, Butler County was a rural region in western Pennsylvania comprised of small farms and businesses. A devastating fire could ruin a family's life. Hannahstown Mutual Fire Insurance Company was chartered March 23, 1860, and Louis Krause was elected first president of the company.
From 1860 through 1898, all company policies and records were written in German. Sometime in 1989 the change was made to write policies and records in English. Policy number 110 written in 1863 for a farm had a total coverage of $1260 for the dwelling and farm buildings. The house itself had coverage of $325. This policy now hangs in the company's office.
During its early years, Hannahstown Mutual was an assessable company that sometimes went as long as two years between premium assessments. At that time, a part-time officer or treasurer ran the company from a home office.
In 1936 the Board of Directors considered providing storm coverage to its policyholders but it was not until 1956 that this coverage was actually adopted.
It was 1962 before the Board of Directors hired the first full-time company employee. Today the company has four employees, three full-time and one part-time. Steve Mennor is President and Dale Koegler is Secretary and Treasurer. The company's present office was constructed in 1975 and is located just west of Saxonburg.
Homeowners non-assessable coverage was offered to the public in 1964 and today accounts for 40% of the premiums written. The company offers a full line of property insurance including Commercial and Businessowners packages with liability. Independent agents write coverage in western and central Pennsylvania.
The company is rated "A" by Demotech, Inc., of Columbis, Ohio.
A few of the present Board members are descendants of the original founders of the company. They continue the tradition of fair and honest settlement of claims.
